As Twitter continues to grow, more and more users are adopting it. Twitter has become the buzzword of the 21st century and the word tweet has taken up a whole new meaning. Celebrities are tweeting almost every minute, government officials are there as well, and so are young kids. Twitter’s privacy policy recommends that one must be 13 years or older to use the site. A user is also responsible for any activity that occurs under his/her screen name.
The interesting thing about Twitter at the moment is it’s “openness”. Anyone can tweet, even pornstars who from time to time post rather explicit tweets, pictures and videos.
It is very strange though that Twitter seems not to have measures in place to control the proliferation of pornographic material, never mind the pornstars themself. Social media is generally regarded as a family type of media and users generally utilise it to keep in touch with friends, colleagues and family. Given that users as young as 13 are allowed to tweet, it is surprising that pornographic material on Twitter is not regulated, pornstars are becoming more and more active on the site. Although some of the pornstars lock their profiles, one can still easily see the background picture (s) which in most instances is explicit.
Twitter should be applauded for promoting freedom of speech and expression but at the same time, if you are going to allow someone as young as 13 to use your site, It only makes sense to put measures in place that will control pornographic content.
