The top three mobile networks in South Africa have always been the topic of much contentious debate. Fuseware has put our systems to work on seeing which one of the big 3 come out on top in online conversations. We pitched Vodacom, Cell C and MTN against each other, and compared them on Twitter. The results are interesting to say the least:

Vodacom has, by far, the most number of online conversations. MTN comes in second place, with Cell C trailing close behind. Despite Cell C’s best efforts, they are still the underdog when it comes to the share of online voice. Vodacom’s lead stems from the fact that they are sponsoring certain rugby events, as well as holding quizzes which people love to talk about.

It is evident from this table of occupations that Vodacom attracts the younger student crowd, as well as the more creative crowd – in the form of designers and photographers. Cell C tends to attract the more technical crowd, hence the presence of the larger engineer tag. Interestingly, MTN has a following of entrepreneurs in the online space on Twitter.
