We constantly get asked about Foursquare usage in South Africa. However, due to the very private nature of the platform, it is very difficult for us to get any usable information with regards to absolute user numbers, top venues and checkins .

However, we have noticed that a significant proportion of people connect their Foursquare accounts into Twitter, to auto-update their statuses when checking in to places.

We have analyzed every single tweet in South Africa for the past 6 months containing Foursquare checkins and mayorships, and found the following figures:

Total number of check-ins and mayorships: 45000 over the last 6 months

Total number of unique users checking in: 7800

Top locations being checked into, country wide:

Neighbourhood, a restaurant / bar in Cape Town, has been the single most checked into place in the country, as extrapolated via Twitter results.

Rafikis comes in spot number 2, which is also a bar in Cape Town. It seems that Cape Town, as shown by Fuseware’s Twitter stats from last year, also seems to be the early adopter crowd for Foursquare.

Beyond that, we have a collection of pubs, restaurants, gyms and airports that trail close behind.

So What Are the Absolute Numbers?
We can make an educated guess taking into account multiple data sources, that there are any number between 30000 and 50000 users in South Africa on Foursquare. Although this shows that the network still has a way to go before it becomes mainstream, explosive viral growth is not out of the question. The active number of Twitter users in May of last year was given as 55000, and this number has grown nearly 10 fold since then.

Important Note

This data does not in any way represent the overall usage of Foursquare in SA. It shows how Foursquare is being used by everyone in the country that has connected their Foursquare accounts to Twitter, and who accesses Foursquare on a browser instead of the application. However, we can still make some useful extrapolations from this data.

The recent terrorist attack in Oslo received massive media coverage as soon as the word broke out. As is becoming usual in this day and age, Twitter was the first source of information for what had happened.

As the days progressed, South Africans had their voices and sentiments heard on Twitter. We have analyzed these mentions to see exactly what we said. All results in this post are from South Africans talking about Oslo on Twitter.

Word Cloud

As seen above, the word cloud shows how people discussed the terrorist attack. It was linked it to a Christian bomber, as well as accusations of Isreal’s Mossad being behind the attack. In light of the recent death of Amy Winehouse, some people felt it important to mention their condolences for both tragedies in the same tweet.

Sentiment Graph

Our state of the art sentiment algorithm shows that most people felt extreme uneasiness and sadness regarding the incidents, but there was a notable lack of other negative emotions such as anger and loathing.

Overall Sentiment

The overall sentiment was highly negative, of course. The scale sits at 25%, indicating very high negativity in the mentions.

Top Emotions

We matched the emotive words used in all tweets to show a word cloud of top emotions.

Top Locations

Most tweets originated from Johannesburg. We also picked up on a few tweets from tourists within the country talking about the tragedy, notably the U.S.A.

Most Influential Hashtags

Most hashtags were related to the attacks directly. This shows the top hashtags used in tweets over the last few days after the attack.

Most Active Users

These users are the ones that tweeted most about the attack. User @whumba is at the top, which appears to be an Islam related account.

Most Mentioned Users

Gareth Cliff from 5FM was the most mentioned user in all Oslo related tweets. This was due to the reweet of his tweet, as given in the top tweets below:

Top Tweets

The top tweet, most influential and retweeted by SA, was created by 5FM’s Gareth Cliff.

Using the Social Insights platform, we wanted to see what the sentiment is around South Africa’s top two political parties, according to conversations on the social network Twitter.

What we found was predictable, but also insightful. The DA is much more involved in online interactions, and this is apparent from its online reach and discussions. The ANC’s online chatter revolves mainly around the infamous Julius Malema, and is largely negative. One can make the assumption that DA’s main following corresponds to higher LSM groups, which interact more often online, and thus has greater support in the online community.

Our research platforms are often used by brands for monitoring their online reputation and researching consumer insights. However, the results also become quite useful in the midst of breaking news that leverages the social networks for communication. Since our systems monitor what is being said on these social networks, we can monitor the coverage of an event such as the Libyan crisis, in real-time.

Twitter is the top medium being used to spread information regarding the devastating events happening in Libya right now. Here are some of the results we have found:

Overall, the words indicate strong indicators of violence in the region, and also mirror the support that countries such as Germany and Britain are providing to the people of Libya. The overall sentiment is positive, which is indicative of how people are reporting in neutral terms, or are expressing their positive outlook on the impending collapse of a long-standing regime. The emotional word cloud gives more insight into emotions used in these tweets:

Some of the most influential tweets of today include the following:

The top occupations if people spreading the message on Twitter indicate there is a professional bias towards journalists and writers, with photographers also covering the events as they unfold:

The top locations indicate which countries are spreading Libyan based information the most. Egypt, the Netherlands and Britain or among the top sources.

The top hashtags (Twitter keywords) are focused on key areas of the struggle, namely to do with Gaddafi and the events that occured on February 17th, 2011.

We are proud to present our original research and data into the minds and demographics of South African tweeters.

Up until now, no extensive Twitter study has been conducted for South Africa. Fuseware has profiled millions of tweets from South Africa and tens of thousands of users to better understand the South African Tweeter. We have aggregated this information into dozens of graphs and word clouds for easy reading and dissemination.

It contains insights and demographics about what SA tweets about, when they tweet, what they tweet with and how often they do it.

The report is available absolutely free to look at and use (with attribution to Fuseware) at this link:
